Small hydropower plants (SHPPs) are considered to be one of the most environmentally friendly sources of energy, but their environmental impact is not always clear.

Many people are interested to know what a hydropower plant is. First of all, it is a type of hydraulic structure that uses water flows, which often flow in the channel of rivers or other water bodies, to generate electricity.

There is no common standard for the definition of small hydropower plants in the EU, for example, in Portugal, Spain, Ireland and more recently Greece and Belgium, the upper limit was 10 MW.
